README
Lingo 1.2 SHORT DESCRIPTION Lingo is a multilingual dictionary to translate single words from one language to another. At present, ten languages are provided: EN, FR, DE, PT, ES, IT, NL, SV, LU, EO (Esperanto). The language files are derived from a freeware dictionary program for Windows, ERGANE (see below). WHAT'S NEW In version 1.2 (released 2001-03-08), the following features were added: - display adapts itself to screensize (Revo, Series5, Netbook) - zooming (choosing a smaller or larger font) is supported - last chosen language couple is saved - fix of a problem with the single-quote character - minor corrections in languages, LU (luxemburgish) added. COMPATIBILITY The program was initially developped on Revo in OPL. Feedback of users shows that it also runs on other machines. INSTALLATION 1. Either from PC, launch directly Lingo.SIS, or copy Lingo.SIS to the EPOC-machine and start it. The installation program adds an icon in the Extras-bar. 2. The program Lingo requires that a runtime, SYSRAM1.OPX is installed on the machine. Other programs require this module too, so it might already be presented on the machine. In case it is not, install also the included Sysram1.SIS. 3. In order to be of use, at least two language files must be installed. The names of the language files consist of two letters. Select the desired files and copy manually to \System\Apps\Lingo on the EPOC machine. SHORT INSTRUCTIONS OF USE FOR LINGO A detailed Helpfile can be called from inside the program. The ascii sketch below serves as introduction: +--------------------------------------------------------+ | in: [ test ] | Lingo12| | + ------ + | out: +---------------+-----------------+ | In :EN | | | test | examen | ^ | | | | test | essayer | + ------ | | | test | essai | | Out:FR | | | | | 1/1 | | | | | | + ------ + | | | | | Help | | | | | | | | | | | v + ------ + | +---------------+-----------------+ | | | | Wed 7 | +--------------------------------------------------------+ The buttons In: and Out: allow to select the language couple. The in-field is for entering a word. A wildcard * or ? is allowed at any position (beginning, inside or end) of input. Results are displayed in the two-column outlist. If there are several pages of results, the keys ^ (UP) and v (DOWN) allow scrolling. Further important keys are: ESC erases the in-field ENTER - if in-field or in-language has changed 1. searches IN-language for matching words 2. searches OUT-language to display results - if OUT-language has changed, only step 2 is done - else, no operation # . , these symbols are replaced during typing by * to make it easier (without shift-key) to use wildchars. CTRL-E quits the program. Note: Accents (supported by EPOC) are represented correctly on the output, but are not required for a search on input. ABOUT ERGANE Ergane for Windows can be downloaded at www.travlang.com The following is an extract of the Ergane Helpfile: > Ergane is a multi-lingual dictionary programme that uses > Esperanto as an auxiliary language to translate single words > and short expressions from one language to another. The use > of an auxiliary language makes it possible to create a multi- > lingual dictionary that does not need an astronomically large > number of bilingual wordlists. > > Because Esperanto words usually have only one meaning, the > chances of totally erroneous translations are quite small. > Nevertheless in general it would be unrealistic to expect the > translations to be as accurate as those of dictionaries that > use wordlists compiled for a specific source and destination > language. > > This freeware programme was written by Gerard van Wilgen. > Being a freeware programme it is obviously available for free > and it can be copied and distributed without any restrictions. > Also, any wordlist generated by Ergane is free of copyright > and may be used by other programmers as a data source for other > applications. DISTRIBUTION The program LINGO is plain vanilla freeware. It is provided "as is" with the usual legal irresponabilities. Credits for Ergane at its language files go to Gerard van Wilgen.
