README
PhoneCode (C)1999 C.P.Ridings NOTE: PHONECODE IS FOR UK PHONE AREA CODES ONLY. Introduction Phonecode is a program which will determine a geographical area and charging rate level for a particular number (or area code number) OR determine the area code number for a specified location. Phonecode can return the following information on an area code: i) The Area of the number (if applicable) ii) The Charging Scheme iii) The Operator (if known) This means you can: i) Lookup where you are calling. ii) Work out how much a call is costing you. iii) Lookup the area code for many major towns. Installation To install Phonecode to the psion, copy the following files across: phoncode.opa to the APP directory phoncode.pic to the OPD directory phoncode.dbf to the DAT directory install the phoncode.opa icon to the system screen as normal. Tutorial Phonecode is fairly easy to use, so skip this section if you think you can work it out. For the purposes of this tutorial, we'll look up the area for the code 01483 and the details for 087060 numbers - then we'll go on to lookup the area codes for Blackpool and Ipswich. Start the Phonecode program from the system screen as normal. The first screen you get tells you the program is unregistered - you can use the program free for now, but if you continue to use it you should register it (the procedure for this is later in this file). Press the right arrow key to show Continue and hit enter. You then get the title screen that tells you what the program is - hit enter. You're at the main menu. Make sure Lookup Area from Code is highlighted and hit enter. This window is the window to enter the phone number in. So type 01483 and hit enter. The computer says Searching and then shows the results screen. Here you can see that: The code 01483 is in Guildford, and is charged by the normal charging system (i.e. it varies depending how far you are away from the location you are calling). We want to clear the results, so hit enter. This leaves you at the main menu. Hit enter to lookup another code. Type 087060 and hit enter. When the results screen shows you can see that: The code 087060 is a non regional number charged at national rate and is run by BT. Hit enter to return to the main menu. Use the arrow keys to highlight Lookup Code from Area and hit enter. Type in Blackpool and hit enter. The results screen for this kind of search looks slightly different. The words "Area Code: 01253" shows at the top. This is the most likely area code for this region. Below this it says "Other Options". Some towns may have more than one area code - if they do (and Blackpool doesn't) the left and right arrow keys will cycle through them here. Hit enter, highlight Lookup Code from Area again. This time type *ipsw* and hit enter. The * is a wildcard and will match any string of characters. This will match any area that contains the characters "ipsw". The results scheme gives you the code. Hit enter. Highlight exit and hit enter to finish. Registration Registering the program will stop the initial screen telling you it is unregistered and gives you the rights to continue using the program [note, see the copyrights section for what you can use for free]. The registration charge is 5 UK pounds and should be sent to C.P.Ridings 23 Cunningham Avenue Guildford Surrey GU1 2PE A registration key will be sent to you. You will need to include an email address (or postal address if you do not have one) and state that you are registering Phonecode. This key will unlock the program. Once you get your key: Start the program. When the initial window tells you the program is unregistered, hit enter. The program will ask you to enter the registration code - type your code in exactly as it is given to you, including upper and lower case, symbols etc. Hit Enter when you've done. If the program does not give you the title screen then you have entered the key incorrectly - rekey it and try again. Copyrights The database that the program uses [phoncode.dbf] is derived from the file nng_list.txt included in this distribution. This file came from the internet and is freely distributable. phoncode.dbf contains a cut down and modified version of this table [so that it will fit on the psion]. The file nng_list.txt is derived from The Oftel Specified Numbering Scheme code list which is crown copyright but may be reproduced with due acknowledgement. Therefore the database file, phoncode.dbf, is free for you to use however you want. Should you redistribute phoncode.dbf, please include nng_list.txt and this copyright section. phoncode.opa is the program which interprets the data file. This is the part you pay for on registering. This program is distributed as shareware and is therefore free for you to try but must be paid for if you continue to use it. phoncode.opa is copyright 1999. Notes This program should take account of the number changes soon to take place, however, whilst the data is believed to be accurate - use is at your own risk.
