README
Psion Setup, v1.0 ================= Psion Setup is a freeware installation program for any Psion program that is supplied with a *.ctl control file. Psion Setup is similar to the PsiSetup Windows program (written by Psion PLC, UK), except that Psion Setup runs on the Psion itself, and thus allows MAC, UNIX, Amiga, and other non-Windows users to easily install standard Psion software. The only requirement is that the Psion software must be supplied with a *.ctl control file (eg: PsiMail Internet). Psion Setup is freeware, and may be distributed by software authors with their shareware or freeware applications. Licence Agreement - IMPORTANT ----------------------------- Before using Psion Setup, you must read and agree with the terms of the accompanying file LICENCE.TXT. Permanent Installation ---------------------- If desired, you can permanently install Psion Setup to your Psion. Software authors may however supply Psion Setup with their programs. To install Psion Setup... 1. Copy Setup.opo to an \OPO\ directory on any disk. The file is suitable for storage on a Flash SSD. Usage ----- Move the cursor to the RunOpl icon and press Enter. Select the *.ctl installation control file to use. NOTE: press Tab to help navigate to the control file location. Once you have selected the desired control file, press Enter and follow the on-screen prompts. NOTE: You can abandon the installation at any time with Esc, and you can kill Psion Setup at any time with Psion-Esc. Notes for Programmers --------------------- To use Setup.opo with your application, all you need to do is make a *.ctl control file and supply the *.ctl and Setup.opo files with your application. Making *.ctl files A *.ctl installation control file is a plain text (ASCII) file containing a list of files to be installed in the following format... [\DIR\]Filename.ext ...or... [Disk:\DIR\]Filename.ext eg: [A:\DIR\]Filename.ext Note: o The disk name is optional, if not given the files are installed to the disk chosen by the user during installation. o If the disk is explicitly specified, then it overrides the user's disk selection for that file. o The [brackets] are crucial, they must exist. o Filenames must be in valid MS-DOS and Psion 8.3 format and must end in an extension or a period (.), eg: Valid Invalid Filename.ext Filename.extn Filename. Filename o Leading and trailing spaces are ignored by Setup.opo, but cause PsiSetup to fail. You should ensure that all leading and trailing spaces are removed before distribution. o Lines starting with ; (semi-colon) or REM (remark) are ignored by Setup.opo, but cause PsiSetup.to fail. This feature allows you to comment out files during the testing phase. You should ensure that all comments are removed before distribution. Distribution You are free to distribute Setup.opo with any application you create, provided that you acknowledge the source of Setup.opo with the following or similar text: "Psion Setup (c) is written by Jochen Siegenthaler and used under licence." Initial Directory Psion Setup initially shows *.ctl files in the directory where Setup.opo itself is located. Setup.opo should reside in the same directory as the application's files (eg: on a floppy disk or in a zip archive). When the user starts Psion Setup any *.ctl file in the same directory is shown immediately. Disk Space Psion Setup calculates available + required disk space for all attached disks (A,B,C & M) and shows these to the user. Should the user try and install to a disk with insufficient available space, then no files are copied and the error "Insufficient disk space" results. Error Handling Extensive and intelligent error handling is built in. All errors that could be recoverable allow the user to retry. Errors in control files can be ignored if desired. Presence of existing files during installation causes a dialog to appear, forcing the user to skip, overwrite, or overwrite all. If he selects overwrite all, then he can choose to skip unchanged files. Setup checks file size and date/timestamp to see if a file has changed. Skipping all unchanged files is beneficial when installing to Flash SSDs. User Instructions Psion Setup is aimed at the first-time user. You should write your instructions accordingly, using exact mention of every keypress required. Psion Setup may be on a remote disk, in this case the user must start the remote link first and have the link program setup so that the Psion can "see" the remote file system. Note: this is *not* the default setting of PsiWin - see PsiWin's help file to change the setting. Note that you can speed up access to REM (remote) disks if you press Control-Tab and then enter the desired full path directly (eg: REM::A:\). To close the dialog use Shift-Control-Enter. This method prevents the remote disk from being scanned every time you change a disk or directory.
