1 IMPORTANT INFORMATION
=======================
REGISTRATION
Bible Reader is freeware when used with the supplied King James Version of the Bible. You do NOT need to register. However, if you feel you can afford the registration fee, then registering will encourage development of Bible Reader and help offset some of the support costs.
The program may be registered on-line using CompuServe's Shareware Registration service. GO SWREG and use ID 13477. The cost is $25.
Bible Reader may also be registered through RegNet - The Registration Network. Regnet can be reached on the Web at http://www.swregnet.com/ or by calling +1 805 288 1827 or for callers in the USA 1 800 999-2734. The SWREG number for RegNet is 596. The cost is $25.
If you use the Text Compression Utility or any version other than the supplied KJV, then Bible Reader is SHAREWARE. If you find that it is useful, please register it. Registration will enable the program to compress all the books of the Bible. The unregistered version only allows the New Testament from John's Gospel to Revelations to be compressed and read.
Off-line users may register by post, by sending FIFTEEN POUNDS in either Sterling or Irish Punts (cash or cheques). Please see the "About" information in the program for contact details. Cheques should be made payable to "Christopher Took". Cash should only be sent by registered post.
On receipt of your registration fee, I will email or post your registration code to you. Please make it clear what name you wish to appear in the "Registered to:" display.
COPYRIGHT
Please note that many versions of the Bible are subject to copyright, and it is the responsibility of the user to ensure that they comply with any copyright law that applies to the texts they use.
However, if you compress a version that is public domain and would be happy to make it available, then please let me know. This might save someone else the trouble of compressing the same version again.
DISCLAIMER
I cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage howsoever caused as a result of using Bible Reader. If you use the compression features, I recommend that you ensure you have your current installation of Bible Reader backed up, especially the BIBLE.DCT file.
2 INSTALLATION
==============
You require at least two zip files to install and use this program:
BIBLE.ZIP (the zip file this text file was in)
KJVNT.ZIP or another zip containing specially compressed books of the Bible.
The latest version of the program and all the available books can be found at:
http://indigo.ie/~storm/biblereader/
Copy BIBLE.OPA to the \APP directory on any drive
Copy BIBLE.INF and BIBLE.HLP to the \BIB\SYS directory on any drive
Optionally, copy STORM.PIC to the \PIC directory on any drive
*IMPORTANT!!*
Rename the .DCT (dictionary) file you want to use (eg KJVNT.DCT) as BIBLE.DCT and copy to the \BIB\SYS directory on any drive. The file BIBLENEW.DCT is supplied for those who want to compress a new version from scratch and is not required otherwise.
When you start Bible Reader it will create a BIBLE.INI file on your default drive. If you are upgrading, any existing INI file will be detected and deleted, and a new INI file created on your default drive. If you want this file on a different drive, simply move it to the \BIB\SYS directory on the drive where you want it. This file is about 220 bytes long, but it is recommended to place it on a RAM drive.
Copy at least one data file (eg *.KJV) to the \BIB directory on any drive. You may have books in \BIB directories on more than one drive.
Install the program in the usual way on the system screen, using Psion+I. All the installed books will be listed under the icon in alphabetical order.
*** IMPORTANT NOTE TO UPGRADERS ***
The data files used by Bible Reader 1.1 are the same as for previous versions, BUT THEY MUST BE RENAMED TO WORK WITH THE NEW VERSION. The renaming should follow the scheme below:
MATTHKJV.DAT _> MATTHEW.KJV
MARK.DAT _> MARK.KJV
GENESKJV.DAT _> GENESIS.KJV
EXODUKJV.DAT _> EXODUS.KJV

4 ABOUT BIBLE READER
====================
Bible Reader is Copyright 1995-1997 Christopher Took. The KJV is distributed as freeware on condition that it is not used for financial gain of any sort. Reverse engineering of program and data is expressly forbidden.
Please let me know if you have found the program useful, or have any comments for improvements or changes. Please pass it on to as many people as possible.
Use of the program with any version other than the supplied KJV requires registration. See above for details of how to register. Bible Reader registration costs US$25 or FIFTEEN POUNDS in STERLING or Irish PUNTS.
No responsibility of any kind can be taken for any loss of any kind arising from the installation and use of Bible Reader. The current released version may contain some bugs - please let me know if you discover any and I'll do my best to fix them. The latest version of the program is available from my home pages.
5 COMPRESSING TEXT
================
It is recommended that the compression utility of the program is run using the Psion 3a emulator on a (fast) PC - compression times will be significantly better than running on an actual Series 3a.
RUNNING
When the utility is run, a dialogue appears. This asks for the version abbreviation which is used in the Bible Reader file naming convention. For example for the King James Version files supplied with Bible Reader, this is "KJV". If you wanted to compress text from the Revised Standard Version, you would enter "RSV". Abbreviations may be between one and three characters.
The dialogue also asks for one of three overwrite options. If set to "No" then if an output file is found, compression of the corresponding source file is skipped. If set to "Ask", the program will prompt each time it detects an existing output file. If set to "All", all source files will be compressed.
You can specify whether the program looks for text files in either the \BIB\TXT\ directory, or the \TXT\ directory. You may also specify whether the program uses one dictionary for all versions (BIBLE.DCT) or uses a separate dictionary for each version. For example, if the version abbreviation is NIV, you may specify that the program uses BIBLENIV.DCT. You should copy BIBLENEW.DCT and rename it as BIBLENIV.DCT in order for this to work. You may also optionally rename BIBLE.DCT to BIBLEKJV.DCT.
The program searches for files (in the \BIB\TXT\ directory on your DEFAULT drive) that conform to the Bible Reader naming convention. For example, Bible Reader uses up to the first five characters of each book of the Bible, so it will search for GENESXXX.TXT, EXODUXXX.TXT etc. When it finds a file, it will start to compress it, adding any new words to the dictionary and creating an output file in the \BIB directory on your DEFAULT drive, with an extension the same as the version abbreviation. For example GENESRSV.TXT will produce an output file of GENESIS.RSV.
For the new files to appear under the Bible Reader icon, you will need to create an alias of the Bible Reader icon using Psion E from the system screen. The directory should be \BIB\. Use the version abbreviation as the extension (eg RSV). Save the alias as, for example, BIBLERSV.ALS.
FORMAT
It is essential that the source text file is formatted correctly. This may be quite time consuming, but it means that Bible Reader can decompress the file faster and format it correctly on the screen. Using "search and replace" commands in a text editor can make this job much easier.
The file must be named according to the naming convention explained above (see RUNNING).
There should be NO title contained within the text of the book. Each chapter should begin with # followed immediately by the chapter number and a single carriage return. Carriage returns between verses indicate that Bible Reader should display with a new paragraph. Otherwise Bible Reader will display verses in paragraphs with superscript verse numbers.
For words to be displayed in italics, surround the words with square brackets [] without any extra spaces.
Quotations marks are represented according to the following table:
open double quotes { (open brace)
close double quotes } (close brace)
open single quotes < (open angle bracket)
close single quotes > (close angle bracket)
Numerals that aren't verse numbers should be enclosed in braces: { }
To force a new line use a double open brace: {{
When compressing, any word that isn't found in the dictionary will be added to the dictionary and appear _underlined_ on the screen. If any unknown characters are encountered, the program will beep and display the character, its ASCII code and the file position, but will continue compressing the file.
MANAGING DICTIONARIES
Each data file will only work with the dictionary file with which it was compressed. If you want to have dual versions on your machine, you can use one dictionary file (BIBLE.DCT) for both versions. This will save space, as there are many words that will occur in both versions. When you open a data file, it will first search for a dictionary that matches the version (eg an NIV file will look for BIBLENIV.DCT), and if it can't find that, it will look for BIBLE.DCT. Currently, the dictionary management facilities are limited, and this doesn't permit using bookmarks across different dictionaries and versions.
READING TEXTS
Set up the Diamond list to use the extension you have chosen, You may specify up to three extensions in addition to KJV for use with Bible Reader. Make sure you save these settings so that they are remembered by the program.
NON-ENGLISH TEXTS
As far as I can tell, the Text Compression Utility should work with non-English language texts, provided that all characters are part of the Psion character set. If anyone tries this, please let me know, whether successful or not. A Russian language fount driver is available for the Psion, and it should be possible to customise this for Greek. Please let me know if you are interested.
THANKS
The Text Compression Utility is available as a result of all the mails I received asking for an NIV version! I think I received more requests for the NIV than I did bug reports (and there were plenty of those!). Particular thanks to all the beta testers who really did offer consistent and enthusiastic encouragement and did much sterling work flushing out bugs. Please continue to report on your experiences of using Bible Reader.
Thanks also to Steve Litchfield, who runs 3-Lib, the Psion Shareware Library, and has been instrumental in making Bible Reader available to the offline community.
3-Lib can be contacted at 22 Grays Crescent, Woodley, Berkshire, England, RG5 http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/
slitchfield@cix.compulink.co uk
100640.107@compuserve.com
And finally, thank you to all those who have contacted me with bug reports, comments and suggestions. It has all helped to improve the program - please keep the feedback coming.
And on last thing - if you have web access. Please visit Steve Litchfield's page and vote for Bible Reader! (http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/survey.htm) Thank you very much!
